Modern Calligraphy has exploded over the past decade as a great creative craft to learn and develop at home from the comfort of your sofa, with little mess and a selection of simple tools. Pioneered by budding brides-to-be, Calligraphy has become one of the most sort after finishing touches decorating invitations and name cards adding that extra flare to the day, OR the crafty individual who likes to send and decorate cards for all occasions and a bit of a stationary geek (like me!). But where to start.... In this beginners modern calligraphy class your teacher, lettering artist and illustrator Eleanor Herring, will start by introducing you to the tools of the trade (which are yours to take away at the end of the class!) discussing materials, styles and the correct way to place the nib to paper, how to make your ink flow, as well as after care of all the materials. The class will then dive straight into practicing basic calligraphy exercises making shapes and strokes with traditional black inks and flexible nibs, before moving on to lower and uppercase letter forms, with a dash of flourishing a long the way. By the end of the class you will have started to create joined-up words in your own style, with plenty of time to practice and one-to-one help. Each class is tailored to the individual and core needs of the group and what they would like to work on.

With a maximum of four participants, these three hour workshops are designed to provide everybody with plenty of time for one on one attention. Heather always aims for sessions to be flexible to individual participants needs. Tabletop Workshops, the teaching arm of Purr & Wag It runs out of Heathers Camberwell home. here will be plenty of home made cake, teas and/or coffee to keep you going. This workshop is for those of you who already know the basics of 2D wet felt making. Heather will guide you through the layering technique to make a seam free vessel, the gate way to all things 3D. Wet felt making is a simple process (once you know how) made up of a series of repetitive actions. Many people find it relaxing and some a stress buster. But, elements of felt making are quite vigorous and very hands on. If you have arthritis in your hands you may find parts of the process challenging. That being said it is not stopped anybody before and Heather is very happy to help you with vigorous parts of the process. Allergies to cats or indeed wool? Please note Heather has three cats (they will be elsewhere in the house during the workshops). Antihistamines are available but her workshops may not be for you.
